Last night, the competitors of the Worlds Sports Car Challenge visited the Circuit of Sebring for round 6 of the championship! The race signals the half way point of the series, with only 5 further rounds between now and the end of April. Therefore, the points won by the teams yesterday could prove vital to their championship hopes as the series becomes more and more popular within the Rfactor2 Community.
The round saw a record number of teams attend, with 27 on the grid, all of which had 2-3 drivers per car. That in itself shows how many people attended last night in a series that is growing and looking forward to a very bright future in sim racing.
The teams all lined up behind the safety, as it slowly rolled around the track before unleashing the grid of prototypes and GT cars. The engines roared as both classes fought for an early lead in the race, with Rapid Racing and Idos Motorsport having an incident in turn 1 of the race, sending both cars down the order and into the GT3 field.
It was a great start by the GT cars, with most getting through the first corners and laps without incidents, most the teams would retain their positions, including the #07 BMW M6, along with Team RSI who are leading the championship.
As time progressed, the field began to spread out, in the lmp2 field the top teams showed true pace as they blasted their way around the old tarmac of the Sebring Circuit. Kyushu motorsport, Max Grip endurance, Exiled Motorsport and Rapid racing all put down some of the fastest lap times of the race, with the lead of the race changing every time one of the teams went into the pit lane! Different strategies began to evolve and a true battle of outright speed and pit stops began between the lmp2 teams.
Iceberg racing also showed decent pace as did the new Northern Lights Racing team. They would fight with the top teams throughout the race, bug fell back down the roder as the race progressed, certainly a few teams to keep an eye on as we head into the second half of the season.
In GT3 Gregorz Bulat took his BMW M6 far into the lead of the GT3 pack for the first 3 hours of the race, the Poland Simracing car was slowly extending its lead over the Team Markam #100 car, followed closely by the #77 Martini Racing Cehvrolet camaro and the rest of the GT field. Chaos would strike the Leading GT3 team though, as they encounter a Rfactor2 bug where they could not change drivers, the team was forced to disconnect from the race and rejoin the session, costing them allot of time in the process. Adam Karkuszewski Got in the car, and would put down what has be said the best stint of his Sim racing life, as the car makes it way back to 2nd place in class with just 15 minutes left in the race.
Another team who would benefit from the chaos of sebring was the new #52 car of Pulse Simulation Racing. Myles Dixon and Michael cooper took their strikingly beautiful Chevrolet Camaro to the front of the pack when they caught and overtook the #20 Flat Out Racing car in the hours of darkness.
With just 4 minutes remaining in the race, team RSI would also catch up to the back of the #20 BMW M6, demoting them from the podium, meaning that their championship hopes where kept alive just a little longer as we head into the second half of the season.
It certainly was a great race, plenty of incidents occured, and sadly allot of teams didn't make it to the chequered flat. However if there is one thing i can say about this event, its that Sebring has certain Scarred some teams, while elevating others. As we head toward the 3 hours of Portimao, the championship has only just begun!
See you all in two weeks time
